Charlotte Mew uses different types of language and structure of her poem to show the dysfunctional relationship between the farmer and his bride, one of the langunge techniques she uses is colloquial language, with using this language technique we instantly know that the characters in the poem are uneducated as they are speaking in a informal manner such as “she runned away”, which also gives us the impression that the characters are uneducated as using the word runned makes no sense and an educated person would use ‘ran’ instead of runned. It also tells us that the character is a farmer as using ‘runned’ is a technique of colloquial language.

Using maid imagery tells us that the maid can relate to nature as it says “happy enough to chat and play with birds and rabbits and such as they”, this tells us that the maid trusts nature and is the only thing in the world she can talk to and be herself as its the only time in the poem when she is not forcing being happy.
